With GRS SIGNUM, you will always be on the safe side.
Already in 2009 our Software GRS SIGNUM received the European FoodTec Award. GRS SIGNUM is network-compatible and has a modular design. With the basic module you can handle tasks like ingredient labeling, allergen labeling, gathering of GMO relevant data and the compilation of product data sheets efficiently.
In addition to the basic module, additional modules exist for a wide variety of requirements, they can be added any time, when and if you need them:
Master data from an existing EPR system such as recipes, raw materials and suppliers’ information can be imported into the GRS SIGNUM software. This lets you avoid multiple data maintenance, reduce incorrect data entries and ensure synchronous data.
You maintain the ingredients for each individual raw material and every individual supplier in the database. The ingredient terms are retrieved from catalogues stored in the program in order to prevent errors or double and multiple entries. It is also possible to translate the name of the ingredients into the languages stored in the system.
All ingredients used can be gathered here, even the ones that do not need to be labeled. This gives the quality assurance department the best overview on all of the raw materials used.
It is easy to retrieve detailed information on certain raw material components. GRS SIGNUM is an excellent information system not only for the crisis management department (for example, if a general warning message is issued for a certain ingredient) but also for supporting the purchasing department (in case the price for a certain ingredient changes on the market).
Raw materials
Store the composition of raw materials by raw material and/or supplier and keep an overview on whether and when the specification data for a particular raw material has already been stored in the database.
State for each raw material whether the individual ingredients need to be declared or not because of lack of technological effect. At this point, it is also possible to enter the origin of the ingredient as well as the place of processing. This information can then be retrieved for the corresponding reports or evaluations.
Recipes
GRS SIGNUM offers a comprehensive management system for lists of ingredients:
The calculation of nutritional values is an additional module of GRS SIGNUM. It provides access to the German BLS (Bundeslebensmittelschlüssel) database on nutritional values, which is updated and maintained by the Max Rubner-Institute (MRI), or alternatively to the USDA database (United States Department of Agriculture). Nutritional values from the databases can be copied into the individually defined data structure and amended or specified more precisely using other data. This application can then consolidate nutritional values for the different process stages and produce a nutritional label for the final product (nutrition facts).
Process losses as well as process additions can be taken into consideration in the calculation of nutritional values. Added to that, it is possible to convert vol% to wt% for concentrates, for example.
Templates that can be configured for nutritional information (e.g. BIG4, BIG8) simplify data collection. It is also possible to store and use GDA-values.
The meat products module can only be used together with the GRS SIGNUM software. This module allows an appropriate and easy QUID calculation for meat products (QUID = QUantitative Ingredients Declaration). The results are calculated following the rules of BVDF and/or GdCh.
Here again, the integrated report generator provides for free design of all evaluations, forms and reports to reflect the computed data for each individual type of meat on a recipe level.
The product optimization module can either be used as an independent application or as an additional module to GRS SIGNUM and its product development module.
Apart from an optimized recipe composition, comprehensive simulations processes (quality parameters, planned prices, what-if scenarios) can be depicted and assessed. Via the integrated ReportDesigner, the recipe optimization results can be presented in any number of reports with graphical elements. Added to that, the optimization results can be output in various data formats (XLS, PDF, JEPG, HTML, CSV ...) to allow further processing in downstream systems, if required.
Product development is an optional module of the GRS SIGNUM software which allows depiction of all processes, tasks and operations. Added to that, you can generate new recipe versions and receive an overview on recipes, their raw materials, ingredients and other details. It does not matter how many sub recipes you have; with GRS SIGNUM, the computation of raw materials and ingredient compositions, nutritional information, GMO and allergen contents as well as meat values becomes a feasible task.
Store any number of supplemental documents including raw material specifications, analysis records and compliance test documents for each recipe or each raw material as well.
Define the structure of your raw material tests and your recipe development orders and record the success or failure of each test. Analyze the results of your tests thoroughly and comprehensively. With the integrated ReportDesigner, everything is possible.
The module equipment & processes is first of all an optional addition to the product development module. It can be used to depict individual production processes and all machines, their parameters and the raw materials/ingredients used in these processes.
Use this module for creating production plans, documents for machine settings or HACCP (HACCP = Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) requirements and monitoring lists or adding personnel working times and/or machine operating times as well. With this module, it is possible to arrive at an integrated pre-calculation.
Our risk management module expands the GRS SIGNUM software and allows you to document and monitor the risks arising from the raw materials you use and to take corrective actions, if needed. Using a matrix structure, you can define origin and/or production/processing of your preliminary products including possible risks.
You can also define the evaluation scale as narrow as you need it and set up an appropriate catalogue of measures. This all can be combined with time or validity limitations.
This module allows to define the criteria of certain product groups and individual recipes that have to be complied with. The criteria can refer to nutritional values, ingredients, allergens or any combination thereof.
They can also be collected specifically for individual countries or regions.
A comparison between criteria and actual values will be provided in an individual frame. This is an easy way for you to review the suitability or marketability of your products. Legal regulations, customer requirements or your own quality criteria for a more flexible application can be gathered here.

GS1 interface - your complement in data management
With the introduction of the GTIN (Global Trade Identification Number), new challenges have arisen for the food industry. The required data is entered per article in the portal of GS1 (1WorldSync). However, updating the required data usually requires a lot of work capacity.
Often, the required information comes from several internal systems and the data is of varying quality. The data must first be converted into a uniform format, which makes data maintenance even more difficult. This procedure can be accomplished manually only with great effort. However, the high competition in the food industry requires efficient processes and systems. In addition to the basic module, GRS SIGNUM provides an interface to GS1, which can also be used as an interface between your ERP system and GS1. The data from your internal systems are automatically incorporated into accurately fitting templates. Data from different sources and in different quality are compiled uniformly and clearly. This allows you to retrieve your product data quickly and easily.
GRS SIGNUM uses the 1WorldSync publishing interface and automatically fills the desired template with the appropriate data. GRS SIGNUM historizes your data exports and ensures integrated and holistic data management. By automatically transferring your product information, you save time on data management and minimize the risk of erroneous and redundant data. Just adapt to the Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN).
Your benefits at a glance:
The LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) software can be used as an independent application. Of course, it is also possible to expand the GRS SIGNUM software with the laboratory software GRS LIMS. GRS LIMS is used to depict all important processes in a laboratory from receiving the sample to the creation of the analysis certificate.
Via flexible configuration options, the software can be adapted to individual processes and tasks. In addition to that, data from upstream systems (enterprise resource systems, extracted data from analysis equipment ...) can be imported. Various data formats (XLS, DOC, TXT, CSV ...) can also be imported in consultation with your laboratories.
Using the ReportDesigner, any number of analyses and analysis scopes can be printed (e.g. as an analysis certificate) or exported as a data file. It is possible to create individual gathering templates for each type of test where you also define how many analysis values or analysis parameters shall be gathered. There is also the possibility of defining minimum/maximum/default values as a reference which check the manually entered analysis values for plausibility.
An individual design section provides for the comprehensive assessment of all data gathered. Just enter the relevant parameters and read the trends for the analyzed values at any time. This allows quick and simple statements on the quality of the raw materials received. A comparison of suppliers or laboratories is also possible.
The complaints management software can either be used as an independent application or as a module to GRS SIGNUM. With this software you can gather all incoming and outgoing complaints (final consumer, food retailers, bulk consumers, service providers, carriers, suppliers). Of course, it is also possible to include internal complaints about in-house goods and services. Finally, you can assess the data according to your own specifications. This will put you in the position of detecting error sources or the accumulation of errors as soon as possible and to initiate appropriate actions. Trend analyses can also be compiled and/or a graphical depiction on the complaints received can be made.
